DEFINITIONS & GENERAL RULES

1. The Malaysia Fully Residential Schools International Wind Orchestra Festival is a
competition for secondary school/institution wind ensembles.
2. The musicians of the participating ensemble must be a secondary student from the
participating school/institution, aged 19 or below, and must not be a professional
musician. This definition does not include student conductor of the participating
ensemble.
3. The student conductor of the ensemble also must be a student from the participating
school/institution, aged 19 or below. He or she must not be a music teacher or
professional musicians.
4. A professional musician is defined as a person who performs, conducts or teaches
music as a profession, either on a full-time or part-time basis, with or without a
tertiary music education.
5. Each musician and student conductor can only perform with only one participating
ensemble.
6. The maximum number of musicians for each ensemble is 80 people.


MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

7. Adhering to the definition of wind ensemble, all wind musical instruments are
allowed, including woodwinds and brass instruments, to be used for the purpose of
this competition.
8. All percussion instruments are allowed. Some basic percussion instruments are
provided for the competition and will be set on stage. All ensembles are encouraged
to fully utilise these instruments. Percussion mallets and drumsticks, however, are not
provided. The ensemble also may bring and use their own percussion instruments
without removing large instruments from their original stage position. Space and time
constraints on stage must be taken into consideration if the ensemble decided to use
their own percussion instruments.

9. The list of percussion instruments provided are:
i. Timpani
ii. Marimba
iii. Xylophone
iv. Vibraphone
v. Tubular bells
vi. Concert Bass Drum
vii. Concert Gong

10. Please be aware that there will be acoustic panels as well as music stands positioned
on the stage too.
11. The use of non-wind musical instruments are strictly not allowed. Examples of such
instruments are:-
i. string instruments, such as violin and cello
ii. electronic musical instruments, such as bass guitar and synthesizer
iii. traditional musical instruments, such as gamelan and kompang


PERFORMANCE AND STAGES PRESENCE

12. Each participating ensemble is required to perform two (2) songs in total during their
adjudicated performance:-

i. A choice from set Test Pieces set for MyWOF 2019:-
a) Bakawali (by Johari Salleh)

ii. One participating ensemble’s song of choice.

13. The participating ensembles are encouraged to showcase a range of musical
techniques and intricacies through their song selection, best suited to the ensembles’
level of capabilities, within the time limit given.
14. Five published scores in A3 sizes with all measures numbered must be provided to the
organising committee for each composition performed. Any duplicated scores must
be accompanied by a letter from the publisher.
15. These scores must be submitted during the reporting day of the Festival.
16. Each ensemble will be given 20 minutes to perform the two competition pieces in
front of the adjudication panel. This will include any tuning session on the stage prior
to their adjudicated pieces.
17. This 20-minute stage time starts when the first musician steps onto the stage and
continues until the last person from the ensemble leaves the stage.


ADJUDICATION

18. Every ensemble will be assessed during their adjudicated performance according to
the criteria below:

Total: 100%

19. The final score for each ensemble will be the average from marks given by all
adjudicators, rounded up to 2 decimal places.
20. The overall results will be announced during the final day of the Festival.
21. Each ensemble will receive a written appraisal from the adjudication panel.

22. All ensembles that have achieved the averaged final score below will be awarded the
corresponding medal:-
i. Averaged final score of 80.00 to 89.99 – Gold
ii. Averaged final score of 70.00 to 79.99 – Silver
iii. Averaged final score of 50.00 to 69.99 – Bronze
iv. Averaged final score of 49.99 and below – Certificate of Participation

23. Any ensembles that have averaged final score of 90.00 and above will be awarded
Gold with Distinction, a new award category introduced to commemorate the 20th
year running of SBP Wind Orchestra Festival.
24. The highest scoring ensemble will be crowned Best Ensemble Performance of the
Festival for 2018.
25. The adjudication panel will decide the best section from all participating ensembles to
be awarded Best Woodwinds/Brass/Percussion Awards for 2018.
26. The adjudication panel will also decide one Student Conductor from all participating
ensembles to be crowned Most Outstanding Student Conductor for 2018.
27. Ensembles that violate any rules of the competition will have their score penalised,
based on the discretion of the organising committee. This will include, and not limited
to, exceeding the performing time allowed, removing percussion instruments on
stage and misbehaviour of the musicians during the Festival.
28. All decisions made by the adjudicators, including the selection of ensembles to
perform during the concluding ceremony, are final. Appeals from the participating
ensemble/school/institution will not be entertained.


COPYRIGHT RULES

29. Individuals or schools/institutions whose ensemble perform copyrighted
and/or music requiring royalty are responsible for conforming to all rules and
regulations pertaining to the performance of copyrighted music.
30. Reproduced copies may be used only with the permission of the publisher.
